In their first home game of December, Barys hosted Spartak. The matchup coincided with the celebration of the club’s 26th anniversary. Adil Beketayev, Emil Galimov, and Adam Scheel — who had missed the previous road game due to injury — all returned to the lineup.
Ansar Shaikhmeddenov opened the scoring, successfully tipping in Jake Massie’s point shot. A few minutes later, however, No. 2 of Barys became the unlucky participant in an opposite moment — after deflecting off his stick, the puck slowly slid into the home team’s net. The goal was credited to Pavel Poryadin. Five minutes after that, Danil Pivchulin scored with a spectacular spinning shot. Lucas Lockhart strengthened the visitors’ lead early in the second period with a power-play goal.
Once again, the Astana team had to show character and claw their way back. First, Riley Walsh, fresh out of the penalty box, beat Artyom Zagidulin with a perfect wrist shot. Then Massie redeemed himself, finding the back of the net with a backhand finish.
The game was decided in overtime, when Michael Vecchione blasted the puck into the top corner, sending the teams off the ice. Adam Scheel finished the night with 22 saves. For Barys head coach Mikhail Kravets, this win marked his 200th career victory in the Kontinental Hockey League.
On December 7, the Kazakh team will host Sibir in Astana.
