Barys Lose to Sibir in Shootout for the Third Time This Season

In their final game before the break for the Channel One Cup, Barys hosted Sibir in Astana. Following the victory over Spartak, the home coaching staff made only two lineup changes. Instead of Tamirlan Gaitamirov, Beibarys Orazov—who had not played in the KHL for exactly two months—was listed as the seventh defenseman. Andrey Shutov started in goal.

The scoring opened midway through the game when the visitors capitalized on a mistake during Barys’ zone exit, and Vyacheslav Leshchenko scored from close range. Before the intermission, Dinmukhamed Kaiyrzhan came close to equalizing, hitting the crossbar. For a long time, Sibir held on to their minimal advantage. However, in the final minutes, Barys’ push with an empty net finally paid off. Mason Morelli scored on the power play to force overtime.

In the extra frame, the home team failed to convert at least two clear-cut scoring chances. And in the shootout, Sibir’s players once again proved more accurate. On December 16, the Kazakh team will face Avtomobilist in Yekaterinburg.
