In the first match of their away series, Barys faced the reigning Gagarin Cup champion, Metallurg. Astana’s lineup saw the return of Samat Daniyar after a minor injury.
The opening period was played at a decent pace but lacked many dangerous moments. The score was opened just 64 seconds before the break when Daniil Vovchenko, left unmarked in the right faceoff circle, converted a power play for Metallurg.
The second period proved to be the turning point of the game. The visitors failed to capitalize on several clear chances, while Magnitogorsk made the most of their limited opportunities—Robin Press and Boris Osipovich each found the net, frustrating Andrey Shutov once more.
In the final period, the home team converted another power play thanks to Luke Johnson. Towards the end of the game, Barys finally managed to break through Alexander Smolin’s defense, with Semyon Simonov scoring a consolation goal. On February 28, Galym Mambetaliev's team will play against Lada in Tolyatti.
