Barys began their short away series in Cherepovets. Ansar Shaikhmeddenov and Ruslan Ospanov replaced Vsevolod Logvin and Stanislav Bocharov in the fourth line.
In the opening minutes, Severstal came close to scoring as the puck dropped behind Barys goaltender Andrei Shutov, but Ilya Khokhlov managed to clear it just in time. Shortly after, Barys launched a dangerous counterattack, forcing the home team to commit a penalty. However, it was Severstal that capitalized on the situation. Playing shorthanded, Alexander Skorenov scored on a rebound.
In the second period, the hosts continued dominating puck possession and took shots from all angles. Shutov held his ground, except when Skorenov completed a power-play goal to register his second of the night. Towards the end of the period, Alikhan Asetov got Barys on the board with a beautifully executed breakaway goal while his team was shorthanded.
In the final period, precise goals by Nikita Korostelyov and Kirill Pilipenko extended Severstal’s lead. Yet, Barys did not give up and reignited intrigue late in the game. Anton Burdasov scored on the power play, followed by another goal during even play after excellent setup work from Asetov. Despite their efforts, the Kazakh team couldn’t complete the comeback. A costly line change error led to an empty-net goal by Skorenov, sealing his hat trick.
Barys will face SKA in St. Petersburg on December 8.
