Bailey’s Brace Helps Barys Rout Lada

In their first road game of the regular-season campaign, Barys travelled to Tolyatti to face Lada. The Astana coaching staff brought Alikhan Assetov and Batyrlan Muratov into the lineup, with Muratov making his first KHL appearance of the season.

The visitors made a solid start, creating at least three clear-cut scoring chances. On one of them, Nikita Podskrebalin kept his team in the game after a 2-on-1 break. Shortly afterwards, Tice Thompson missed the target from a promising position in the slot. However, late in the period, a counterattack by Barys’ fourth line resulted in Jake Massie opening the scoring.

Immediately after the intermission, Justin Bailey doubled Barys’ lead with a powerful shot from the top of the offensive zone. Then, with 46 seconds remaining in the second period, Semyon Simonov joined the attack as the second wave and beat the Tolyatti goaltender again.

In the final period, goals from Ian McCoshen, Bailey and Tice Thompson allowed the Astana side to seal a convincing victory. Hunter Shepard, who stopped all seven shots he faced, recorded his first KHL shutout.

On September 18, Mikhail Kravets’ team will face Metallurg in Magnitogorsk.
