Simonov’s Double Helps Barys Win in Yekaterinburg

After the break caused by the Channel One Cup, Barys returned to action in Yekaterinburg. In the game against Avtomobilist, the Astana team played with 13 forwards (with Kirill Panyukov returning to the lineup) and six defensemen.

The opening period was a tight contest with few dangerous chances. Both teams had one power-play opportunity, but the score remained level at the first intermission.

The deadlock was broken early in the second period following an excellent interception by Samat Daniyar, who caught the opponents during their zone exit and immediately set up Semyon Simonov for the opening goal. Late in the period, Kirill Panyukov and Mason Morelli did strong work along the boards to create space for Michael Vekkyone, and the visitors’ No. 88 sent the puck into the far top corner.

A power-play goal by Maxim Osipov midway through the third period seemed to bring Avtomobilist back into the game. However, just a minute later the Daniyar–Simonov combination struck again, with Simonov scoring his second goal of the night and recording his second brace of the season. In the final minutes, the Ural team replaced their goaltender with an extra skater in an attempt to close the two-goal gap, but the final push fell short. Max Willman finished the play after Mason Morelli cleared the puck and scored into the empty net. Andrey Shutov ended the game with 33 saves.

On December 18, the Kazakhstani team will play Dynamo Moscow in Moscow.
