The road trip of the team from Kazakhstan’s capital continues in Omsk, where Avangard and Barys will play their second head-to-head game of the current season. In the first encounter, the Astana side came out on top, confidently defeating the Hawks at home with a score of 6–2.
In the previous round, Guy Boucher’s men lost at home to Metallurg (1–4). A goal from Damir Sharipzyanov and 24 saves by Nikita Serebryakov were not enough to earn points against the league leader. The Omsk coach noted that his team performed better in even-strength play, outshooting the opponent, but penalties proved costly.
After 19 games, Avangard has 25 points. Konstantin Okulov (8+13) and Andrew Poturalski (7+14) are among the top six scorers of the current championship. Damir Sharipzyanov (6+11) and Maxim Lajoie (5+12) rank among the league’s most productive defensemen. Forward Nail Yakupov remains on the injured list.
Barys, on Monday, saw its four-game point streak come to an end with a 2–3 loss in Nizhnekamsk against Neftekhimik. Goals were scored by Ansar Shaikhmeddenov and the team’s leading scorer Riley Walsh (7+9). Michael Vecchione became the first player on the team to reach 10 assists. Andrey Shutov made 31 saves. Mikhail Kravets noted that there were too many individual mistakes and that several players were “not doing their jobs properly.”
Barys currently sits at 19 points after 20 games.
Today’s game will mark Mikhail Kravets’ 400th appearance as a head coach in the KHL.
