After the break for the Channel One Cup, Barys return to action on the road against Avtomobilist.
In their previous game, the team from the Urals earned a 4–1 home win over Severstal. The goals were scored by Nikita Tryamkin, Anatoly Golyshev, Reid Boucher, and Semyon Kizimov. Goaltender Nikita Novosyolov, making his KHL debut, stopped 35 shots. That victory marked Avtomobilist’s 500th win in the KHL. The head coach said he was pleased with how his team handled a tough opponent and capitalized on their chances at the right moments.
With 39 points from 34 games, Avtomobilist sits fourth in the Eastern Conference standings. Team scoring leader Reid Boucher has 24 points (9+15). Vladimir Galkin is among the most reliable goaltenders in the league, posting a 2.09 goals-against average and a .934 save percentage. Defenseman Sergey Zborovsky and forwards Maksim Denezhkin and Stéphane Da Costa are currently sidelined with injuries.
Before the break, Barys lost at home to Sibir 2–1 in a shootout. Mason Morelli scored the team’s lone goal and reached the 20-point mark on the season (8+12). Andrey Shutov made 27 saves. Head coach Mikhail Kravets noted that his team created more chances in overtime than they did over the course of regulation.
The Kazakhstan club has 30 points after 35 games, good for ninth place in the conference and just one point out of a playoff spot. Riley Walsh (9+16) continues to rank among the top seven scoring defensemen in the league. In the upcoming games, the Barys coaching staff will have to manage without Adam Scheel, as the goaltender has been placed on the injured list.
