Barys will wrap up their extended home stand with a matchup against one of the Western Conference leaders, Severstal.
The Cherepovets side has already clinched a playoff berth, but their winning streak came to an end on Friday with a 2–5 loss to Traktor in Chelyabinsk. Alexander Skorenov and Ioannis Kaldis scored for Severstal, while goaltenders Alexander Samoylov and Konstantin Shostak combined for 22 saves. Head coach Andrei Kozyrev admitted that the game did not go as planned from the very beginning, citing too many mistakes and a lack of puck control.
After 59 regular season games, Severstal has collected 76 points. The team’s leading scorer, Ruslan Abrosimov (23+24), ranks among the top offensive players in the league this season. Alexander Samoylov is among the top seven goaltenders in goals-against average (2.23). Defenseman Timofey Davydov and forward Nikolai Chebykin are currently listed as injured.
Barys, meanwhile, let a win slip away in their previous game against the Dragons, falling 3–4 in overtime. Alikhan Assetov scored his 10th point of the season, while team scoring leader Riley Walsh (12+25) and Mason Morelli, who netted his 10th goal of the campaign, also found the back of the net. Nikita Boyarkin made 28 saves. Head coach Mikhail Kravets noted that a poor third period and unnecessary mistakes proved decisive.
After 59 games, the Kazakh side has earned 46 points. Walsh ranks among the top four goal-scoring defensemen in the league this season.
Faceoff for Barys vs Severstal is set for 17:00 Astana time.
