Barys will open their final home series of the calendar year with a game against Sochi.
The southernmost club in the KHL suffered a home loss to Metallurg (1–6) in their previous outing. Sergey Popov scored the lone goal for Sochi, while Ilya Samsonov and Pavel Khomchenko combined for 25 saves. Head coach Dmitry Mikhailov noted that the break in the championship disrupted his team’s rhythm, and against such a skilled opponent his players took too many penalties.
Sochi has collected 23 points in 33 games, which currently places the team at the bottom of the Western Conference standings. The club’s leading scorer is forward Daniil Seroukh (6+13). Goaltender Ilya Samsonov and forward Igor Shvyrev are on the injured list. Earlier this week, the southern club parted ways with one of its key players, Artur Tyanulin, who was traded to Lada in exchange for Danil Bashkirov.
On Thursday in Moscow, Barys defeated Dynamo (4–2). Goals for the Astana side were scored by Ansar Shaikhmeddenov, Semyon Simonov, Ian McCoshen, and Dinmukhamed Kaiyrzhan. Andrey Shutov made 33 saves. Head coach Mikhail Kravets, who received an invitation to the KHL All-Star Game that day, noted that all aspects of his team’s play came together, including goaltending and the power play.
With 34 points from 37 games, Barys continues its push for a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Michael Vecchione (10+15) has drawn level with Riley Walsh (9+16) in the team’s scoring race.
The Barys – Sochi game will begin at 17:00 Astana time.
