Before the Barys vs. Traktor game

Barys will continue its New Year homestand with a matchup against Traktor.

The team from Chelyabinsk is currently going through a sort of rebuild. Last week, Traktor announced the appointment of Evgeny Koreshkov as head coach — a name well known to Kazakhstani fans. Shortly after that, the club parted ways with defenseman Fyodor Kroshchinsky and traded one of its leaders, Semyon Der-Arguchintsev, to Dynamo. Forward Maxim Dzhioshvili went the other way to Moscow.

In their previous game, Traktor lost at home to Metallurg in a high-scoring contest, 4–7. One of the goals was scored by Der-Arguchintsev, who is now already playing for Dynamo. Andrey Nikonov, Mikhail Grigorenko, and Vitaly Kravtsov also found the back of the net. Evgeny Koreshkov admitted that the coaching staff had expected a very different result and noted that the team still needs to clean up certain details and nuances in its game.

After 37 games, Traktor has collected 35 points, which currently puts them sixth in the Eastern Conference. Joshua Leivo (15 goals, 24 assists) is among the top four scorers in the league this season.

After two impressive road wins, Barys suffered a rather unexpected home loss to Sochi on Sunday, falling 1–5 and snapping a four-game point streak. Semyon Simonov scored for the third game in a row. Riley Walsh (9 goals, 17 assists) has once again taken the lead in the internal team scoring race. Head coach Mikhail Kravets noted that his players once again created problems for themselves and were unable to get back into the game after allowing three goals in the first period.

With 34 points from 38 games, Barys currently sits eighth in the Eastern Conference playoff standings. Goaltender Adam Shil remains on the injury list. Emil Galimov’s availability for tonight’s game is once again in question after he was injured in the matchup against Dynamo.
