Barys Hand Lokomotiv Their First Loss of the Season

In their third road game of the season, Barys travelled to Yaroslavl to face Lokomotiv. Following the disappointing performance in Magnitogorsk, the Astana coaching staff made several changes to the lineup. Ansar Shaikhmedenov, Arkady Shestakov, Kirill Panyukov and Madi Dikhanbek were added to the roster, with the latter three making their KHL debuts of the current season. Andrey Shutov started in goal.

The hosts began the game at a high tempo, immediately taking the initiative. However, Barys weathered the early pressure, moved play away from their own net and opened the scoring late in the first period. Garrett Pilon brought Jake Massie into the attack as the second wave, and Barys’ No. 2 — wearing the captain’s armband in the absence of Kirill Savitsky — gave Alexey Melnichuk no chance. Shortly afterwards, Massie’s partner Logan Day scored in a similar situation after receiving an excellent pass from Semyon Simonov.

The second period followed a similar script. Lokomotiv had more possession, carrying out long positional attacks, while Barys patiently defended and waited for their opportunities. Once again, those chances came late in the period. Justin Bailey got his stick on a shot from the same Pilon to make it 3:0. Then Ansar Shaikhmedenov, coming out from behind the net, found a gap in the goaltender’s equipment. Following the play, Daniil Isayev entered the game.

But he could not keep his net untouched either. Early in the third period, Semyon Simonov sent the puck into the far top corner with a shot from the top of the offensive zone. Barys comfortably managed the game from there and secured a convincing victory. Andrey Shutov, who stopped 36 shots, recorded a shutout in his very first start of the season.

On September 22, Mikhail Kravets’ team will face Dynamo in Moscow.
