In their opening game of the new KHL regular season, Barys hosted last year’s finalist, Traktor.
Backed by 10,000 fans, Barys started strong, creating plenty of problems for the visitors’ defense. Traktor struck first on the power play, with Joshua Leivo opening the scoring. The hosts quickly responded—Maksim Mukhametov battled behind the net and set up Ansar Shaikhmenddenov, who scored Barys’ first goal of the new season. Overall, the Kazakh side fired 20 shots on target in the first period, but Sergei Mylnikov turned aside 19 of them.
The second period also saw an exchange of goals. Kirill Savitsky put Barys ahead, pouncing on a rebound in front. Mikhail Goryunov-Rolgeyzer leveled the game on a counterattack. With just over six minutes left in regulation, Tyce Thompson netted his first career KHL goal on a 5-on-3 power play. But Traktor forced overtime when Pierrick Dubé scored with the goalie pulled.
Barys still came away with the win. In OT, Riley Walsh blasted home the game-winner, also scoring his first career KHL goal. On September 9, Mikhail Kravets’ team will face Amur.
