Barys Defeated CSKA and Ended Their Losing Streak

Barys wrapped up their short home stand with a matchup against CSKA Moscow. The Astana coaching staff opted to dress 13 forwards, bringing Emil Galimov into the lineup. Adam Scheel once again got the start in goal.

The game opened with two consecutive penalties taken by the hosts. However, Barys showed tremendous resilience on defense, killing both penalties and even striking on a counterattack. Fresh out of the penalty box, Mason Morelli set up Tyce Thompson, who ended the Kazakhstani club’s scoring drought. The second period passed without any goals, while the final frame turned into a tense and entertaining battle.

First, Michael Vecchione converted on the power play to extend Barys’ lead. After that, the visitors stepped up the pressure and took control of the game, pulling their goaltender for an extra attacker. Maxim Sorkin eventually managed to beat Scheel. CSKA’s coaching staff then took another gamble by once again sending out six skaters, but it did not pay off. Vecchione sealed the victory with a pinpoint empty-net goal from his own zone. In addition to 25 saves, the Barys goaltender also recorded an assist.

On January 20, Mikhail Kravets’ team will face Lada on the road in Togliatti.
