Barys opened the new KHL season with a home game against Sibir. The Astana coaching staff included all of the team’s North American newcomers in the lineup, as well as young Kazakh defenseman Damir Britikov, who made his KHL debut.
The opening period was played with Barys in control, with nearly 10,000 fans turning out for the team’s first game of the season. Mason Morelli hit the post in one of the early chances. Shortly afterwards, Vsevolod Logvin opened the scoring for his team in the new season. The puck found its way into the net off the same post. Sibir created some dangerous chances during their only power play, but the hosts went into the first intermission with the lead.
Yaroslav Luzenkov’s side noticeably stepped up their play in the second period. However, Dinmukhamed Kaiyrzhan halted the visitors’ attacking momentum, beating the goaltender with a shot into the top corner from the entry to the zone. Shortly afterwards, Mason Morelli produced a brilliant pass to send Justin Bailey in alone on the goaltender, and the No. 8 scored his first goal for his new team.
Semyon Simonov then converted on the power play, forcing Sibir’s coaching staff to bring reserve goaltender Denis Gabdrakhmanov into the game. He also failed to keep his net intact for long. Chase Priskie scored against his former team, while Bailey completed his brace before the intermission. Hunter Shepard also picked up an assist on Barys’ sixth goal.
In the final period, Garrett Pilon scored his first goal for Barys, beating returning goaltender Mikhail Berdin. With just a few minutes remaining, Daniil Valitov finally denied Shepard a shutout, with the Barys goaltender finishing the game with 28 saves. The goal, however, had no impact on the final result.
On September 9, Mikhail Kravets’ team will host Salavat Yulaev.
