Nikita Boyarkin: “We Played with Discipline in Defense, Blocked Shots and Performed Well on the Penalty Kill”

Nikita Boyarkin stopped all 34 shots in the game against Amur and recorded his first shutout of the season. The Barys goaltender shared his thoughts after the victory in Khabarovsk.

— Nikita, judging by the score, the game in Shanghai and the match against Amur were completely different.
— Yes, first of all, I would say the teams played differently. Both our team and the opponents approached the games in a different way. In the match against Amur we acted very compactly and carefully in defense. In Shanghai the game was more entertaining for the fans, full of emotions. There were many goals and even fights. It was probably tougher for the goaltenders there. In Khabarovsk we focused more on executing the coach’s game plan.

— This is your first shutout of the season. How do you think it happened?
— I think we all made very few mistakes. We played with discipline in defense and the guys blocked a lot of shots. We also did a good job while shorthanded. At certain moments I managed to make the saves or freeze the puck in time to stop the play. In the second period Kirill Savitskiy sacrificed himself and blocked a dangerous shot right in front of our net. That’s why I decided to name him the best player of the match (laughs).

— You had lost eight consecutive games in Khabarovsk before this. Did you know about that?
— No, to be honest, it seems like no one really knew about that streak or even thought about it. First of all, we understood that they needed the win to continue their fight for a playoff spot. But we also prepared well for the game. Everyone did their job and we achieved a team victory.
