Before the Barys vs. Vityaz match

In the third game of their home series Barys will face off against Vityaz. This will be their second encounter within a week — last Saturday the team from the Moscow region claimed a confident 4-1 victory.

After that success Vityaz had a tough trip to the Far East, losing to Admiral (3-6) and Amur (2-3). In the game against Amur, Nicholas Baptiste scored his first goal for his new team, and Ivan Vorobyov also found the back of the net. However, Desyatkov's team managed to concede two goals while being on a power play, both from the same Amur player, Kirill Sleptsov, who decided the game. Goaltender Maxim Dorozhko stopped 28 shots. Coach Pavel Desyatkov mentioned at the press conference that his team had a poor second period, with their offense completely absent during that stretch.

After nine games Vityaz has accumulated six points. Derek Barach leads the team's scoring with 6 goals and 2 assists. Still on the injured list are defenseman Grigory Vaschenko and forwards Ilya Arkalov, Vladimir Galuzin, and Vladislav Tsitsyura.

On Thursday, Barys earned their first regulation-time victory of the current championship. Under the guidance of Vyacheslav Butsayev, who made his debut as head coach of the Astana team, they narrowly defeated Sochi. The lone goal was scored by Wade Allison, assisted by Alikhan Omirbekov, who has now earned points in three consecutive games. The star of the match was Nikita Boyarkin, who stopped 26 shots and recorded his first shutout of the season. Barys' coach noted that his team created enough chances to extend their lead, but their finishing still leaves much to be desired.

Barys currently has five points after nine games. Defenseman Connor Smith is questionable for today's game due to an injury sustained on Thursday. On a positive note, defenseman Nathan Beaulieu has returned to practice after recovering from injury.

The Barys vs. Vityaz match will start at 15:00 Astana time.
