Barys will play Salavat Yulaev in Ufa for the first time this season. Earlier, the opponents met twice in Astana, with each team earning a win in regulation time by the same score of 2–1.
In the previous round, Viktor Kozlov’s team defeated Neftekhimik in Nizhnekamsk (3–1). Vladislav Yefremov, Aleksandr Zharovsky (7+10), who moved into first place in the team’s scoring race, and Grigory Panin scored for the visitors. Semyon Vyazovoy made 31 saves. The Salavat coach praised his players’ character but lamented the team’s failure to convert a five-minute power play.
In 29 games, the Ufa team has collected 25 points. Defenseman Nikita Zorkin and forwards Anton Berlyov, Nikolay Khvorov, and Denis Yan remain on the injured list.
On Sunday, Barys’ winning streak came to an end with a home loss to Avangard (2–5). Max Willman scored his first KHL goal, and Alihan Omirbekov added another tally. Michael Vecchione reached the 20-point mark (7+13). Mikhail Kravets said that the key moment of the game was a failed stretch in the second period when his team allowed three goals in 40 seconds.
The Kazakh team has 27 points after 30 games. The most productive player on the Astana roster, Riley Walsh, has 21 points (7+14). In the upcoming games, the Barys coaching staff will have to play without Adam Scheel, who suffered an injury. Traveling with the team are Nikita Boyarkin and Kirill Savitskiy, both removed from the injured list, as well as Roman Starchenko, Beibarys Orazov, and Kirill Nikitin, who have returned from the Kazakhstan national team.
