Ahead of the Severstal – Barys Match

Barys continue their first road trip of the new season in Cherepovets.

Severstal come into the clash with Astana after suffering two straight home losses. In their previous outing, Andrei Kozyrev’s squad fell to Metallurg (2–5). Both goals for the hosts were scored by the team’s top scorer, Ruslan Abrosimov (5+1). Goalies Alexander Samoylov and Vsevolod Skotnikov combined to stop 21 shots on target. The head coach noted that his team lost momentum in the second period after taking three penalties.

Through five games at the start of the season, Severstal have collected four points. Abrosimov is among the league’s leading goal scorers. The injured list includes goaltender Konstantin Shostak, defensemen Thomas Grégoire and Artyom Shchuchinov, as well as forward Danil Veryaev.

Barys also lost their last game to Metallurg (1–5). Penalties proved costly in Magnitogorsk as well. Jake Massie scored his first KHL goal, the lone marker for the Kazakh side. Emil Galimov extended his point streak to five games. However, Astana’s most productive player, Mike Vecchione (3+4), missed the chance to extend his own streak when he failed to convert on a penalty shot. Andrei Shutov, making his fifth consecutive start, recorded 32 saves. Head coach Mikhail Kravets said his team kept losing rhythm because of penalties, though they created chances at even strength.

Barys currently sit on six points after five games. Alihan Asetov, who was injured against Metallurg, is expected to join the team’s injured reserve in the near future.
