Barys kicks off their off-season competition by facing Amur in the «Cup of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan» at home. The team from Khabarovsk has already played one exhibition match this summer, where Andrey Martemyanov's squad, mainly consisting of reserve players, lost 0-3 to the VHL team «AKM» from Tula in Novogorsk. Nearly all of Amur's top players, including their foreign recruits, missed that game.
For Barys, today's match marks the first under new head coach David Nemirovsky. With 19 players from the team called up to the Kazakhstan national team, Barys has brought in young talents from their system to compete in the tournament. All foreign newcomers who have arrived in the capital, including defenseman Will Butcher, are expected to play against Amur today. Butcher joined the team last Saturday.
Damir Zhafyarov has been named captain for the Cup of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan in the absence of Roman Starchenko, with Daniil Apalkov and Dinmukhamed Kaiyrzhan serving as assistant captains.
