Barys wrapped up their first home series of the new season with a matchup against Dynamo Moscow. Tice Thompson missed the game for medical reasons. Joining Astana’s offense were KHL debutant Vladimir Volkov and Batyrlan Muratov, who played his first regular-season game with the main squad. In defense, Ian McCoshen returned to the lineup after being removed from the injured list.
The visitors struck early, opening the scoring just 40 seconds into the game as Maxime Comtois redirected a shot from the blue line. Before the break, Barys had a golden opportunity to tie it up, but Dinmukhamed Kaiyrzhan couldn’t convert on a one-on-one chance against Maxim Motorygin.
Early in the second period, Barys capitalized on the power play as Ansar Shaikhmeddenov scored off a perfect pass from Alikhan Omirbekov. Near the end of the frame, Vyacheslav Kolesnikov netted his first-ever KHL goal, scoring during a 5-on-3 advantage.
In the third, Nikita Gusev beat Andrei Shutov with a turnaround shot to level the game, but the Kazakh side answered quickly. Michael Vecchione once again punished Dynamo on the power play, and shortly after, Omirbekov scored from Vecchione’s assist. Vecchione sealed the win with an empty-net goal, with Shutov registering an assist on the play.
On September 18, Mikhail Kravets’ men will head to Magnitogorsk to face Metallurg.
