Barys Suffer Another Shootout Defeat

Barys played their second game at the Puchkov Tournament in St. Petersburg against SKA-VMF.

The Astana club’s coaching staff fielded an experimental lineup for the game. Hunter Shepard, Jake Massie, Chase Priskie, Garrett Pilon, Justin Bailey, Arkadiy Shestakov and Kirill Savitskiy did not take part. Alihan Assetov made his first appearance on the ice this preseason. Kirill Lyapunov, Abzal Alibek and Batyrkhan Muratov were also included in the lineup, while Andrey Shutov started in goal.

The home side looked more active in the opening stages of the game. However, Barys created the most dangerous opportunity after the break when Kirill Panyukov fired a shot off the crossbar from a good position in front of the net.

Midway through the second period, the Astana side opened the scoring. Playing on the power play, Kirill Lyapunov was quickest to react to the rebound from Tyce Thompson’s shot and sent the puck into the net.

Barys then earned three consecutive power plays. Towards the end of the period, however, the St. Petersburg side levelled the score when Nikita Suraev found the back of the net.

With no winner determined in regulation or overtime, the game went to a shootout. Barys were once again unable to come out on top. Despite Vladislav Nurek replacing Shutov for the shootout, SKA-VMF secured the victory with the decisive attempt.

On August 30, Mikhail Kravets’ team will play their next game of the tournament against Admiral. The match starts at 4:00 PM Astana time.
