Team Kazakhstan faced Japan in its second game of the IIHF World Championship Division IA Group A. The Kazakh coaching staff made a couple of adjustments to the first and fourth lines, swapping Artur Gatiyatov and Batyrlan Muratov. Nikita Boyarkin got the start in net.
The turning point came in the second period, when the home side scored three unanswered goals. Dinmukhamed Kaiyrzhan opened the scoring after being left all alone in front of the net and making no mistake. Shortly after, Ansar Shaikhmeddenov finished off a successful 2-on-1 rush. Dmitry Breus then added another with a precise shot into the top corner from distance. Notably, all three players scored their first-ever goals at the senior world championships. Artur Gatiyatov picked up an assist on each of those goals.
In the third period, Alikhan Asetov capitalized on the power play with a strong net-front finish. Roman Starchenko beat the goalie with a shot from the middle of the zone, and Kirill Lyapunov scored his first goal for the national team. Nikita Boyarkin stopped all 16 shots he faced.
After two games, Kazakhstan has six points. On May 5, Talgat Zhailauov’s squad will take on Poland. Puck drop is scheduled for 10:30 PM Astana time.
