Ukraine became Kazakhstan’s fourth opponent at the IIHF World Championship Division I Group A tournament.
The opening period was dominated by Kazakhstan, which outshot the opposition 17–2. The breakthrough came from Vsevolod Logvin, who intercepted the puck in the offensive zone and beat the Ukrainian goalie with a confident finish.
Andrii Denyskin tied the game just 11 seconds into the second period. Midway through the frame, Logvin and Kirill Lyapunov converted a two-on-none rush, while Roman Starchenko capitalized on a turnover at the blue line to extend Kazakhstan’s lead. Ihor Merezhko cut the deficit to one on the power play, and with 18 seconds left in the period, Oleksandr Peresunko scored again to level the game at 3–3.
The teams traded goals in the final period through Yevgeny Fadeyev and Batyrlan Muratov. Overtime solved nothing, and Kazakhstan came out on top in the shootout, with Muratov scoring the game-winner once again.
With one game remaining in the tournament, Kazakhstan has collected 11 points and officially secured first place along with promotion back to the elite division of world hockey.
On May 8, Talgat Zhailauov’s team will wrap up the tournament against France. The game starts at 3:30 PM.
