Before the Barys – Sibir Game

Before the KHL break for the Channel One Cup, Barys will host Sibir on home ice. This will be the fifth meeting between the teams this season, with three of the previous four won by the Novosibirsk side.

After defeating Barys at home earlier this week (4–1), Yaroslav Luzenkov’s team lost to Spartak (6–7 OT), despite holding a four-goal lead during that spectacular match. The goals for Sibir were scored by Ivan Klimovich, Anton Kosolapov, Mikhail Abramov, Scott Wilson—who now leads the team’s scoring race (10+5)—Semyon Koshelev, and Sergei Shirokov. Anton Krasotkin made 23 saves. The head coach noted that his players took unnecessary penalties at 4–0 and later started to sit back, which allowed the opponent to seize momentum.

Across 33 games, Sibir has earned 24 points. Defenseman Egor Alanov and forwards Aleksandr Pershakov and Valentin Pyanov remain on the injured list. This week, the club parted ways with forward Kirill Rasskazov and completed several trades, sending defenseman Artyom Zhukov to Severstal and acquiring Daniil Valitov from Avtomobilist.

On Friday, Barys defeated Spartak in overtime (4–3). The Astana team trailed 1–3 but once again found the resilience to turn the game around. One of the most noticeable players on the ice was Jake Massie, who took part in a scuffle, recorded an assist, and scored both into the opponent’s net and his own. Also scoring were Ansar Shaikhmeddenov, Barys’ leading scorer Riley Walsh (9+15), and Michael Vecchione. Samat Daniyar collected two assists, setting a personal KHL season record for points halfway through the championship. Adam Scheel made 22 saves. Mikhail Kravets, who reached the milestone of 200 career KHL wins, stated that the team played very well and did the right things throughout all three periods. After half of the regular season, Barys has accumulated 29 points.
